Special Cultural Ladder, Size 5, Oak, 2-Way Wooden Ladder, Showa Retro
A "Bunka Kyatatsu" is a wooden stepladder or ladder that was used in Japan during the Showa period.
It features a functional structure where a wooden frame is combined with metal opening and closing fittings, allowing it to stand independently as an A-frame stepladder, or to be extended straight out for use as a ladder.
Today, in addition to being a practical item, its well-worn wood grain and the aged appearance of its metal fittings are appreciated, and it is used as antique furniture for shop fixtures and displays.
This particular item is a "Tokusei Bunka Kyatatsu No. 5" made of oak wood.
It is a unit with the functional structure characteristic of a Showa-era Bunka Kyatatsu, combining a wooden frame with metal opening and closing fittings.
It is a 2-way type that can be opened into an A-frame to function as a self-standing stepladder, or fully extended straight out to form a ladder with a total length of 292cm.
The frame is made of oak wood with a strong grain.
It possesses a warmth and presence as a tool, different from modern stepladders primarily made of aluminum or plastic, thanks to its woodworking structure where the rungs are integrated into the uprights, the wooden plugs visible in various places, and the aged metal fittings.
The scuffs, dents, variations in color, and wear on the leg tips, which have accumulated from years of use, are also unique charms of this particular item.
It offers the distinctive character of an antique tool that has been used in daily life, with a wood grain that new, uniformly finished products lack, combined with the aging of the metal fittings.
It is now rare to encounter such large wooden Bunka Kyatatsu, making it a striking presence in interiors that incorporate antique furniture and tools.
Taking advantage of the unique presence of wood and its well-used texture, it is recommended as an accent for interiors incorporating antique tools and vintage furniture.
If a board is placed across it while it is open in an A-shape, it is easy to use as a display rack for plants, miscellaneous goods, books, old books, and dishes, and it looks great as shop fixtures in shops, cafes, and galleries.
Additionally, it is recommended to lean it against a wall in its ladder form and use it as a ladder rack to hang blankets, stoles, dried flowers, etc.
The rustic appearance created by wood and metal pairs well with industrial, rustic, old folk house, and Japanese vintage styles.
Beyond its practical use, it adds a unique personality to a space that modern metal or plastic stepladders lack, as an interior item that allows you to enjoy the texture and presence unique to antique tools.
